PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE LEAD NAVIGATOR

I don't know who wrote the saying, "Life begins when you leave your comfort zone." But what I do know...it is true. When was the last time you left your comfort zone?

My son and I are heading to Diriamba, Nicaragua on a mission trip to build houses for local villagers. The trip takes place November 2-8, 2012. Our goal is to build 12 houses in four days with 18 men from our church. This is our opportunity to give back to people less fortunate than us. What I like most about this trip is we are doing all the labor. This is not a vacation trip, nor have we allowed anytime for sightseeing. We are cutting, nailing and pouring concrete. These are the kind of trips I get excited about and I know I am making a real difference in the lives of others.

I don't normally ask for assistance from people. But I know many of you truly care and want to participate. I have already paid my own way and all the other people going have paid their way as well. However, we still need to raise money for building materials and you are more than welcome to contribute. Any amount would be appreciated. All proceeds will go to the actual cost of building materials -- not to anyone personally. You have my word on that. Each house costs $2100 to build.

I put some photos from a previous trip on our new website and contact information.

Leadership Crisis on the Horizon

Fortune 1000 companies are showing a renewed interest in leadership development sparked by a shortage of rising talent who will one day fill upper management roles. The trend is examined in a recent survey, "The Rising Risk of a Double-Dip Leadership Crisis: A Pulse Survey on Exploring the Increased Focus on Leadership Development." Human performance consulting firm the CARA Group Inc. conducted the survey, polling leadership, organizational development and training executives from Fortune 1000 companies.

Key findings include:

  • More than half of respondents, 62 percent, say their organizations face a leadership skills gap.
  • A whopping 84 percent of respondents say their organizations have added leadership development programs or initiatives in the last two to three years.
  • However, few consider these programs to be working. A mere 9 percent of respondents consider their current leadership development programs "very effective," while 56 percent describe their programs as "somewhat effective" or "ineffective."
  • Unsurprisingly, respondents reported the skills most critical to future leaders are leading others (54 percent), managing change (43 percent) and strategic planning/vision development (40 percent).
  • Online learning and development (66 percent) is the No. 1 way companies are leveraging technology in their leadership development programs.
